Taking classes is a great start. And since you are at a university that offers both acting and cinema classes, there will also be opportunities for you to audition for plays and student films. Do everything you can. Even i you don’t get cast in a role, get involved with the production somehow just to be there, meet people, and see how the whole process works. Working behind the scenes can be fascinating.
Coming to Los Angeles is an absolute necessity. There are great resources online, like actorsaccess.com, that allow you to sign-up and receive e-mail updates for auditions that are tailored to your look and talents. Acting classes are great, and NOBODY is a perfect actor off the bat; if you’re serious about perfecting your art, consider them. In your downtime, getting a job or internship at a studio, production company, or on-set can be a great way to meet people and let them know that you’re interested in being a part of on-screen magic. Despite the reputation, jobs and internships are not at all hard to come by. You can’t expect to be the director of a studio or a casting director, but you can get connected with those people and make your way in. Also, be aware that nobody wants to hire you without experience. Get parts in little stage productions, make your own films, be in student films; these are all great ways to beef up your resume while you continue to pursue that big goal.
There is not easy journey. College makes it more difficult unless you are weak on experience and maturity.
